Inspiration: In 1986, perfumer Jacques Polge sought to modernize Chanel’s legendary classic, N°5. He wanted to create a new version that was suited for modern women, while still retaining the classic DNA of the original. He started with soapy aldehydes and ylang-ylang, which were hallmarks of the 1921 release to create that sunny laundry day feeling. He added neroli to bolster this concept. He then wanted to create a feminine backbone of rich powdery florals like rose, iris, and add a touch of jasmine to cement the idea. Patchouli, sandalwood, oakmoss, and vetiver gave the fresh notes a woody base to rest on and increased the longevity of the scent.
Monsieur Polge was successful by using modern notes and foregoing the animalic civet and musk of the 1921 release. He created a perfume that is clean, uplifting, feminine, and is classically French in design. The versatile scent can be used in any weather and at any time, from running errands in a tank top and jeans to a formal situation in a dress. Chanel N°5 EDP is a roaring success and the signature of perfume many women across the world.
