Inspiration: Perfumer Francis Kurkdjian created a trend when he made Baccarat Rouge 540. This sweet ambery fragrance starts off with a warm saffron note with sweet jasmine. The heart of the fragrance is where the fragrance really begins with ambergris and sweet amberwood. The base of balsamic fir resin, warm cedar, and ethyl maltol add the depth and the most important part of this fragrance. Ethyl maltol is an ingredient that smells like very sweet raspberry cotton candy, and it plays a huge role in this particular scent and its appeal to so many people.
You will often hear people describe this scent as “burnt cotton candy”, “latex”, or “a dentist’s office”. The reasoning for this is the way Monsieur Kurkdjian formulated the fragrance with captive scent molecules, so that it reacts to everyone’s skin in a unique way. It can smell uniquely different when you skin heats up in the summer as opposed to cooler skin in the autumn and winter. This is part of the fascination with this perfume. Everyone just wants to get it and see what it smells like to them, and this is why Francis Kurkdjian created a legend.
